The Australian National Security Legislation Amendment Bill was a “scary, disproportionate and unnecessary expansion of coercive surveillance powers". The problem was that nobody had even heard of it. We needed to make this invisible law visible.

We constructed giant all-seeing eyes that presented a simple message: “You’re being watched”.

An interactive art installation and protest piece, these eyes became stark symbols of the government’s threat to online privacy, housing concise information about the recent legislation changes.

As each passer-by peered through the portal they became part of the artwork: their eyes live-streamed onto the installations.

The effect was eerie, sinister and very ‘1984’. Just like the legislation itself.
